Problem Discovery

From pill chaos to personalized solutions✨

Currently, chronic illness patients struggle with a complex medication management routine. Many rely on traditional pill boxes or manual tracking methods, which are prone to errors and confusion.

Patients typically face:

• Daily juggling of multiple medications, often 10 or more pills
• Constant worry about taking the right dose at the right time
• Physical discomfort from swallowing numerous pills
• Frequent, inconvenient trips to the pharmacy for refills
• Difficulty adapting to changes in prescriptions or dosages

These challenges significantly impact patients' quality of life and their ability to adhere to treatment plans effectively.

As part of our conceptual design project, we envisioned a future solution that addresses how the complexity of medication regimens often prevents patients from achieving their primary goal: maintaining their health while living a normal life.

Research Approach

Diving into user needs📝

Given the academic nature of this project, our research was based on a representative user persona and secondary research. This approach allowed us to gain valuable insights into the challenges faced by individuals managing complex medication regimens.

Research

User Persona: Leon Levin👨🏻‍🦳

To represent our target users effectively, we created personas that capture the main challenges and needs of potential users.

Next Steps

In a real-world scenario, I would: 🤔

1. Conduct in-depth interviews with patients like Leon to validate our assumptions.
2. Engage with healthcare professionals to ensure our solution aligns with medical best practices.
3. Perform usability testing with prototypes to refine the user experience for our target demographic.

Research Insights

Key Research Insights That Guide Our Solution🔍

Our secondary research involved analyzing existing studies, reports, and articles available online. This comprehensive approach yielded several critical insights:

Time Efficiency

52% of patients are frustrated by long waiting times in clinics.

Indicating a preference for home-based solutions.

Technology Adoption Needs to be User-Friendly
Technology Adoption Needs to be User-Friendly

A large percentage of patients managing chronic conditions are older and may struggle with complex technology.

As in Leon’s case, designing a simple, intuitive user interface is crucial to adoption and continued use.

Personalized Well-Being

Beyond managing the logistics of his condition, Leon needs tools that empower him and boost his mood.

A personalized experience can significantly impact patients like Leon, making them feel cared for and understood.

Solutions

Customized Chewable Pill Printer 🍩

Our solution, MediPrint, is a home-based drug printing system that leverages advanced 3D printing technology to revolutionize how individuals manage their medications.

All-in-One Pill Synthesis

Combines multiple medications into a single, easy-to-take pill.

On-Demand Medication Access

Reduces trips to the pharmacy and ensures medication availability 24/7.

Flavor and Form Customization

Offers enjoyable flavors and chewable options, eliminating the need to swallow pills.

Branding

Innovative Branding with Custom Capsules Design and a Robot Companion 🎨

Our central innovation is transforming the entire experience of taking medication. We've reimagined what has traditionally been seen as tedious and unpleasant into something enjoyable and effortless:

Tactical Palette and Interaction

We've carefully selected a purple-based color palette that conveys quality, wisdom, and calm. This is paired with an intuitive and user-friendly interface.

Medication Design

Each medication is designed with fun, tasty, and colorful flavors, turning the act of taking medicine into an enjoyable experience.

Robot Companion

We've designed a friendly robot character to guide users through the entire process. This character provides a sense of companionship and increases the app's trustworthiness.

This approach aims to make the medication routine more light-hearted, quicker, and more independent, particularly benefiting chronic patients whose mental state may have been affected by their condition.

Final Design

The Design That Brings Our Insights to Life 📱

Entry Questionnaire
  1. All data is pre-populated from the user's health insurance information.

  1. User interaction is minimized, requiring only verification of existing data.

  1. While the initial questionnaire is comprehensive, it occurs only once and significantly streamlines future app usage.

Home screen

The transition from the wireframe to the final design focuses on personalization, replacing a generic interface with a user-centric experience.

The home screen dynamically adapts to each user, offering tailored alerts, relevant updates, and quick access to their medication history.

Notifications

The app's deep understanding of the user's medication regimen enables crucial updates:

  1. Reminders to update prescriptions.

  1. Alerts for low medication stock.

  1. Daily medication reminders.

Positive Feedback
  1. Throughout the user journey, the app provides positive reinforcement.

  1. This gamification element encourages continued engagement and makes medication management more enjoyable.

Print Process Tracking
  1. Users can monitor the printing process remotely.

  2. This feature increases certainty and convenience, allowing users to check progress without being physically present next to the printer.

Final Design

Fun Addition 🍰

To present the project in class, I 3D printed the drug models using my 3D printer, allowing people to get a tangible sense of the designs.
